Akhil Mathew, a.k.a Loozmathai debuted his first original composition 'A Lullaby for the Broken' on 6th August 2021. Inspired by artists such as Devin Townsend, Patrick Watson, and Hans Zimmer, the song is a mixture of indie and orchestral elements. The creation of the song was a therapeutic process for the songwriter. It comprises the reflections of a mind, broken down by mishappenings, and ends on a hopeful note of acceptance.
I am a Heavy Metal Vocalist, Composer, Singer-Songwriter & Producer from Kochi, Kerala. A Digital Marketer by profession, I used to work as a social ads expert for multiple agencies in the city before quitting my full-time job to pursue my career in music. I started my Musical Journey at a very young age, I received my first hands-on experience with a keyboard at the age of 2, a friend of mine at that time taught me the basics and I was absolutely hooked! It eventually got me wanting to perform on stage and that led to my first ever stage performance, it was at an annual day in school, and that was an exhilarating experience. I was also a part of the Church Choir and it’s there where I learned to sing. Later, I had my first-ever BIG show at my college, and that’s when I told myself “This is it, this is my calling”. In 2017, a few of my musician friends and I got together and formed an organisation called ‘Showtime Kochi’, a group of people who all shared a single goal; to provide a platform for artists to perform and uplift them and kick stage fright.
In 2018, I was a part of a band named “Honor Among Thieves” aka HATs, and played keys for them. We performed two shows before having to disband later in 2019. I also performed at events like Open Mics, Flea Markets (in Panampilly Nagar, Kochi and Cusat, Kochi), V12 Verve, Olam Festival, Naalam at NUALS. Most of my performances happened at Showtime Kochi and it helped me hone and master my craft, I performed at multiple events to build exposure, and with this, a new identity was born, ‘Loozmathai’ or ‘Looz’ for short, the name caught on and a lot of people started to address me in that name. Over the years I performed with a lot of Kochi-based artists like Vishnu Varma, Vishnu Sunil, Jeremiah D’Rozario, Kasthoori Mohan (Kalakaari), Shruti Lakshmi (Bhoomi) a fun bunch of people and would definitely love to work with them again. And In mid-2019, I was recruited into ‘The Lost Circus’ a band that made its name with its Chill wave Indie/Dream Pop/Shoegaze type music and we released two songs named ‘Fly’ and ‘Better Place’.
Honestly? Myself. I had some friends who helped me along the way but mostly it’s self-taught, I mix, master, and produce my songs, I also manage artists like Cantabile Vibes (band) and Vishnu Sunil, it has its own ups and downs but the journey is beautiful and I love it.
It was a song borne out of heartbreak, there were a lot of intense emotions. When I first made the song, I was going through a really rough time, this song describes my wants and desires, about wanting to love and feel loved, I wrote this back in Nov of 2020, around march is when I hit an all-time low and working on this song really helped me overcome it, this song was inspired by my favourite artists Devin Townsend, Patrick Watson, Ramin Djawadi, Radiohead, and Yvette Young
Making this song felt like a journey, like scaling a mountain, having its own hurdles, fighting my insecurities but once I finally made it to the top I took in the air and truly enjoyed the view, it was beautiful. Winning that war inside me and finally conquering my fears and putting out my art truly made me feel good.
During the making of the song, I had sent out a few samples (not final)
of the song and asked people what they thought or what feeling they had,
most of them had similar reactions to it, feelings of calm, peacefulness,
lullaby, sleep, pain, comfort, love, happiness-sorrow, sad romance.
I finally stuck with Lullaby because it felt right.
Obviously, more music! I’m working on a song right now and I’m planning on releasing a heavy metal song by next year. Hopefully, it’s inspired by Van Helen, Steel Panther, Judas Priest, Alter Bridge, AC DC, Wolf Mother, Motorhead, Motley Crue. I’ve plans to start my own band as well and take it from there.
Music isn’t the only thing I do though, I also play competitive games like Apex Legends and Valorant. Making music is fun but sometimes I like to kick back and spend some time with my buddies.
